The End of an Era?

A conversation on the crisis of globalization and its significance with Paolo Carozza, professor of law, concurrent professor of political science, University of Notre Dame, and Michael Sandel, Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government, Harvard University

For decades, many believed that universal well-being could be achieved just through economic growth, open borders, and technological innovation. Today, this belief, which fostered individualism and social uprootedness, is faltering. As a reaction, some have retreated into nationalism, rejecting free trade and immigration. Others have called for economic security and fairness. Still others have doubled down on technology to transform education and work. Regardless of these differing approaches, the worldwide crisis of globalization is having significant political, social, and economic effects. The conversation aims to help the audience discern the intellectual and cultural aspects of what may be the “end of globalization.”
