THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS OF CHARTRES: A DANCE OF LIGHT AND COLOR. A WINDOW INTO GOD’S GREATNESS.
What did the people of medieval Europe understand about faith?
They believed. They all believed. They believed in God, in His saints, and in the Church. Faith was not an abstract idea but a living awareness—an encounter with the Everything in the Now.
For them, this awareness was embodied in Mary, the Mother of God. Today, Father Luigi Giussani reiterates this same conviction, calling Mary “the method we need for familiarity with Christ” and “the instrument God used in order to enter into man’s heart.”
In the “To Infinity and Beyond Lab,” we will explore medieval faith through art. Inspired by the 12th-century stained glass window Notre Dame de la Belle Verrière from Chartres Cathedral, participants will help build a real stained glass window for display at the New York Encounter and create their own artwork to take home—all while discovering Mary as the path to a living encounter with Christ.
